TRAINING CAMP PREVIEW: Steelers QB Room & Conditioning Under the Spotlight

As the Pittsburgh Steelers report to St. Vincent College for camp, two major storylines dominate early buzz: veteran QB Aaron Rodgers fitting into the offense, and the team's revamped conditioning strategy aimed at peak performance and lower injury risk.

QB Room Focus: Rodgers, the likely starter for what could be his final season, joins backups Mason Rudolph and rookie Will Howard. His integration—on-field and in meetings—will determine if the QB room can gel under offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s system.

Tougher Conditioning: Head coach Mike Tomlin slated afternoon practices in the summer heat to improve stamina and simulate late-season fatigue, signaling an intense focus on physical readiness.

Rodgers brings unmatched experience, but fitting into a more structured, run-first scheme under Smith could present friction. His rapport with Rudolph and Howard might influence locker-room chemistry and contingency planning.
Conditioning is equally critical. Injuries derailed last season’s consistency, and the shift to hotter morning sessions reflects a proactive, science-backed approach. With strength coach Alex King, the team aims for fewer soft-tissue injuries, helping sustain key players like T.J. Watt, Minkah Fitzpatrick’s successor, and cornerbacks into the postseason.

Aaron Rodgers, QB: “I’m here to learn and lead. The grind starts now, and this group is hungry.”

Steelers training camp starts July 23, with public sessions beginning July 24 at St. Vincent College—their 58th year at the site. Rodgers joins a QB room lacking long-term stability, with Rudolph bringing recent starting experience and Howard viewed as a developmental wildcard. Conditioning has become a team-wide priority after last season’s injury issues, pushing offseason changes in coaching and training philosophy.

Opening camp, two defining threads emerge: Will Aaron Rodgers adapt and lift the QB room? Can the Steelers’ conditioning overhaul yield a healthier, more resilient roster?

Bears Could Get Huge Boost to Pass Rush for ‘MNF’ vs. Commanders
Bears defensive end Austin Booker could return in Week 6. The Chicago Bears could receive a significant boost to their pass rush when they take on the Washington Commanders for Monday Night Football in Week 6. The Bears are now eligible to designate second-year defensive end Austin Booker for return from the injured reserve list after he missed the first four games of the season. Booker had shone in the preseason and seemed the likely choice to serve as the Bears‘ top rotational pass rusher behind veterans Montez Sweat and Dayo Odeyingbo coming into the 2025 season, but he suffered a knee injury in August that forced the team to place him on the short-term injured reserve list after the 53-man roster cutdown. You Do It?   Brain Journal While the Bears have not laid out an expected return timeline for Booker, they will have the option of designating him for return to practice in Week 6 if they feel he has made enough progress in his injury recovery. Once the Bears designate him for return, they will have 21 days to activate him to the roster or else must leave him on IR for the year. The Bears could provide clues to Booker’s status when they hold their first practice of the week on Wednesday and issue their first injury report for Sunday’s prime-time date with the Commanders. They would need to activate Booker by Saturday afternoon at the latest for him to have a chance of suiting up for them on Monday Night Football. The Bears (2-2) will take on the Commanders (3-2) at 8:15 p.m. ET next Monday.
