Ex-Bears Star Takes Pay Cut to Chase One Last Dream in Green Bay

Green Bay, WI – July 28, 2025

A new season brings new hope, but sometimes the greatest stories start after a door closes. In Green Bay, one veteran defender is betting that sacrifice can lead to a final shot at glory.

For two years, he gave everything to Chicago — toughness, leadership, and the willingness to play through pain. He anchored the run defense and never missed a game, yet the headlines rarely belonged to him.

After 34 appearances and 77 tackles, his time in navy and orange ended quietly. A cap cut and changing schemes left a proven starter searching for a home and a purpose, hungry for one last chance to matter.

“I GAVE CHICAGO EVERYTHING — every snap, every surgery, every Sunday I could move. But I left without a ring, without a thank you. Green Bay didn’t promise me glory. They gave me a shot, a purpose — and that’s all I’ve ever needed,” DeMarcus Walker admitted, his voice edged with both pain and resolve.

The numbers won’t tell the whole story. Seven sacks and consistent run defense made him a locker room favorite, but groin injuries and scheme shifts drew criticism. Even so, teammates valued his steady presence and willingness to fight.

Now, Walker heads north, taking a 50% pay cut to join the Packers. For him, the decision is about redemption, not reward. In Green Bay, he’s expected to bring edge depth and veteran guidance to a young, hungry front.

Coaches believe his toughness and playoff hunger can help galvanize a defense searching for its next identity. In a crowded NFC North, every snap and every rep could mean the difference.

The fans, too, are watching. Some remember his best days with affection, others question the move. But Walker understands: respect is earned, not given — and he’s determined to make every moment in green and gold count.

In football, not every journey ends in confetti. But for Walker, one last run in Green Bay is about purpose, pride, and proving that sacrifice still means something in today’s NFL.

Packers Elevate WR Hidden Gem to Active Roster After Bears Offer to Steal Him
Green Bay, WI – 2025 The Chicago Bears’ search for immediate wide-receiver help almost netted them a youngster from inside the NFC North. But the Green Bay Packers weren’t about to let him walk. According to multiple reports, the Bears sought to sign Will Sheppard off Green Bay’s practice squad—an NFL-legal “poach” that would have placed him directly on Chicago’s 53-man roster. League rules allow such moves only to the active roster (not another practice squad), and a poached player must count on the new team’s 53 for three games (with a three-week salary guarantee). Instead, the Packers moved decisively on Tuesday—promoting Sheppard to their own active roster. The call-up keeps the 23-year-old in house and removes the risk of losing him to a division rival at a moment of need.  Who is the “hidden gem”? Sheppard is a 6-3 receiver who starred at Vanderbilt and later Colorado before turning pro. Green Bay signed him July 22, 2025, waived him during final cuts, and then re-signed him to the practice squad on Aug. 27. He’s been wearing No. 82 in camp and preseason.  For the Packers, the promotion is about protecting an asset and fortifying depth while injuries ebb and flow—particularly with recent shuffling at wideout early in the season. For Sheppard, it’s a chance to stick on Sundays, likely beginning on special teams and as a situational chain-mover while he competes for offensive snaps behind the established rotation. If he converts his preseason flashes into game-day production, Green Bay may have uncovered a developmental receiver who can help now and grow into a larger role down the line.
